Definition

The transfer of digital media files from a server to a client, typically using the HTTP protocol, where the consumer may begin playback of the media before the download is complete. Most browser-based media players use progressive download to present content as it is being downloaded. The user experience is similar to streaming (see Stream), but the underlying technology is different (HTTP-based vs. a true streaming protocol).
